Troy was named after his father's
alma mater, USC. They both followed USC teams' progress and attended
games together whenever they had the chance. Troy was also an
avid fan of the 49ers and the Oakland A's, whose uniform he wore proudly
as catcher and third baseman for his Tassajara Valley Little League
team. His principal interest in sports was in playing them: baseball
for TVLL, Mustang League soccer, Danville basketball, San Ramon Bears
football.
Sports were far from Troy's only interest. He loved to spend time in
the library, to work on art projects, to read, and to write poetry and
stories. (Click here to

publication in the 2003 edition of Anthology of Short Stories by
Young Americans.) Troy's mom, Carmen, inspired this creativity and
also his scholastic achievements. Every year Troy was one of the top
students in his class at Sycamore Valley Elementary School, and he particularly
excelled at math (a trait he didn't "get" from his dad but
perhaps from one of his grandfathers, who were an engineer/scientist
and a physician).
The bond between Troy and his dad, Bob, was an especially strong one.
Not only did his dad coach him in most sports, he was also a trusted
confidante who found it difficult to "ground" Troy since they
enjoyed so many activities together. Troy was likewise very close
to his paternal grandparents, whom he called "Pop Pop" and
"Ta Ta." He loved to spend the night at their house
because he knew they would spoil him.
Though innately shy, his considerate nature and warm heart won Troy
many friends. Many of his happiest moments were spent playing
video games or just hanging out with his "best friend in the world"
(Hunter) or with his other close friends (Trevor, "Dan the Man,"
Ken, Dan and Justin). Troy was always there for his friends and
classmates when they needed help, but above all he was protective of
his little sister Alana (despite his playful teasing of her). Baptized
in the Catholic Church, with George and Joanie Hahn as his godparents,
Troy received his First Communion at St. Joan of Arc Church in San Ramon.
Troy Robert Pack is at peace with God as of October 26, 2003, in the
Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette, California. He was buried
wearing his A's uniform.
